What Is The Best Formation In FPL?
Formation is one of those decisions that gets less attention than transfers or captaincy, but it quietly shapes your whole squad. Every formation you pick has to come from your 15-man squad’s fixed makeup of 2 goalkeepers, 5 defenders, 5 midfielders, and 3 forwards, so the formation you settle into each week isn’t just a lineup choice, it’s a statement about which position you’re leaning on to score your points.
Every Valid FPL Formation
You need exactly 11 players including 1 goalkeeper, at least 3 defenders, at least 2 midfielders, and at least 1 forward. Within your squad’s position limits, that gives you eight valid formations to choose from:
- 3-4-3
- 3-5-2
- 4-3-3
- 4-4-2
- 4-5-1
- 5-2-3
- 5-3-2
- 5-4-1
Every one of these is legal, and which one suits you depends entirely on how your squad is built that gameweek.
Why Midfielders Are The Best Position To Build Around
Of the three outfield positions, midfielders have the widest range of ways to score. They pick up points for goals and assists like forwards do, they can earn the clean sheet bonus when their team keeps things tight, and they get appearance points just like everyone else. That alone puts them ahead of a pure forward, who only really has goals and assists to lean on.
The Defensive Contribution rule adds another layer on top of that. Midfielders hit a bonus when they reach 12 or more combined tackles, interceptions, clearances, blocks, and ball recoveries in a match, worth an extra 2 points on top of everything else they’ve already done that game. Defenders have a similar bonus, but midfielders get an extra route into it through ball recoveries that defenders don’t have access to, which is exactly why defensive-minded midfielders have become such reliable point scorers this season. Not every midfielder in your squad will hit that threshold regularly, it tends to be the more defensively active ones rather than out-and-out attacking midfielders, but it’s one more way the position pays off that forwards simply don’t have.
Put all of that together, goals, assists, clean sheet bonus, appearance points, and a realistic shot at defensive contribution points, and midfielders end up being the most well-rounded position in the game. That’s the whole logic behind picking a formation that fits more of them into your starting XI rather than fewer.
Our Pick: 3-5-2
Given all that, our view is that 3-5-2 is the strongest formation to build toward. It gives you five midfield slots, the most any formation allows, while still keeping two forwards up top to chase goals and a back three that’s cheap enough to free up budget for your midfield and attack. It leans hard into the position that scores the most ways, without giving up entirely on out-and-out forward returns.
Second Choice: 4-5-1
Right behind it is 4-5-1, which also fields five midfielders, the same as 3-5-2, just with an extra defender in place of a second forward. It’s a fair alternative if your defensive options are stronger than your forward options that week, or if you want a bit more clean sheet security across a back four rather than trusting a back three. Either way, the principle is the same: both formations are built around maximising midfielders, which is where we think the smart money sits in the current game.
The Bottom Line
There’s no formation that’s correct every single week, your best XI should always come from who’s actually fit, in form, and has a fixture worth playing, not from forcing a shape onto a squad that doesn’t suit it. But as a default lean, building your squad so that a 3-5-2 or 4-5-1 is your natural setup, rather than something you’re stretching to reach, gives you the most exposure to the position that scores in the most ways.
