Triple Captain in FPL: Everything You Need to Know

Every FPL manager gets two lots of four chips a season, which reset at the new year. Triple Captain is the one that turns a single big performance into a season-defining haul. Here’s exactly how it works, the rules you need to know, and when it’s actually worth playing.

What Is the Triple Captain Chip in FPL?

Normally, your captain’s points are doubled. Play Triple Captain and they’re tripled instead. A captain who returns 10 points becomes 30 rather than 20, and if they blow up for a hat-trick or a goal-and-two-assists game, the swing can be worth 15-20 points over a normal week.

It’s the simplest chip to understand and the hardest to time well, because it lives or dies on one player’s performance in one gameweek.

How To Use Your Triple Captain in FPL

Activating it is straightforward: head to Pick Team, hit the Play button above your starting XI, and select Triple Captain. Your captain’s armband icon changes to confirm it’s active, and you can cancel it any time before the gameweek deadline if you change your mind.

If your captain doesn’t play that week, the triple points pass to your vice-captain instead, exactly like normal captaincy rules. If neither your captain nor vice-captain plays, the chip is wasted entirely, so it’s worth double-checking press conferences and team news right up to the deadline before locking it in.

The Rules

  • You get two Triple Captain chips across the season: one to use before the Gameweek 19 deadline, and a second one that unlocks after it.
  • Chips don’t carry over. If you don’t use your first Triple Captain before the Gameweek 19 cutoff, it’s gone.
  • Only one chip can be active in any single gameweek, so you can’t stack Triple Captain with Bench Boost, Free Hit, or Wildcard in the same week.
  • The chip applies to whoever is wearing the captain’s armband when the deadline passes, so make sure your captaincy pick is locked in correctly before you play it.

When to Use Triple Captain in FPL?

The best Triple Captain weeks share one thing: high confidence that your captain is nailed on to play, and a strong reason to expect them to score big.

Double Gameweeks are the classic play. When a player’s team has two fixtures in one gameweek, tripling their points across two matches instead of one gives you two chances at a haul instead of one, which is why most managers save at least one Triple Captain for a Double Gameweek rather than burning it early.

That said, waiting for the “perfect” Double Gameweek isn’t the only approach. A premium player at home against a leaky defence, or a striker who’s been in red-hot form against a side missing their first-choice centre-backs, can be just as strong a case in a normal single gameweek. This is where form and fixtures do the real work: someone who’s been scoring or creating consistently over their last few games, going up against an opponent that’s been conceding chances, is exactly the profile Triple Captain is built for.

Common Triple Captain Mistakes

The chip usually gets wasted in one of a few ways. Managers play it on reputation rather than form, backing a big name who hasn’t actually been producing. They ignore rotation risk and get caught out by a surprise bench appearance. Or they hold out so long waiting for the ideal Double Gameweek that they end up rushing the decision in Gameweek 18 just to avoid losing the chip at the Gameweek 19 cutoff.

The safest approach is treating it like any other captaincy decision, just with higher stakes: nailed-on starter, strong recent form, a fixture that suits them, and ideally two games instead of one.

FPL Triple Captain FAQ

Can I use both Triple Captain chips in the same half of the season? No. One is locked to before the Gameweek 19 deadline, and the second only becomes available after it.

Does Triple Captain affect bonus points too? Yes. The multiplier applies to your captain’s total points for the gameweek, including any bonus points they pick up.

What happens if I play Triple Captain and then my captain gets injured before the deadline? You can change your captain (or your starting lineup) freely up until the deadline. The chip stays active on whoever the armband is on when the deadline passes, so just make sure your captaincy is updated if your plans change.

Can I cancel Triple Captain after activating it? Yes, any time before the gameweek deadline.
